(real silver and gold plated silver) Deep crimson / scarlet velvet forms a background for the shine and shimmer of silver & gold couched thread work. Lined with heavy weight cotton. Note the reticent floral forms dating this work to the Mughal period (1526–1857) Lively alternating floral sprays throughout with unusually shaped buds. This panel we suspect was originally used as a female veil or head covering. Dense and meandering silverwork on bottom band would be placed on the forehead for maximum effect. Some velvet wear (expected with age) as seen in the photos. White spots are silver highlights due to the lighting. Photos do not do this piece justice! Intricately patterned hand-crafted silver embellishment seen here is know as ‘Zardozi’. One of the oldest forms of decorative embroidery from India, Zardozi originates with the Mughal Empire (16th-19th c.) and translates in Persian as ‘sewing in gold’.
