Selecting the right embroidery fabric fundamentally impacts the quality and appearance of finished needlework. Tightly woven natural fibers like linen, cotton, or silk provide ideal surfaces that maintain stitch definition without excessive fraying. The fabric’s weight must correspond to the project—lightweight voile for delicate handkerchiefs versus sturdy denim for jacket embellishment. Many embroiderers prefer fabrics with slight texture, such as osnaburg or quilting cotton, which help hide minor tension inconsistencies in stitches. For counted thread work like cross-stitch, evenweave fabrics ensure uniform stitch sizing, while soluble stabilizers allow embroidery on unconventional materials like tulle or knit. Pre-washing fabric prevents later shrinkage that could distort designs, and ironing creates a smooth working surface. Contemporary innovations include water-soluble fabrics for creating freestanding lace embroidery and heat-reactive fabrics that change color with stitched thermal elements. Environmental considerations have increased demand for organic and sustainably dyed embroidery fabrics among conscious crafters.

Japanese Boro Sashiko slow stitch mending patch naturally hand dyed and vintage fabric embroidery patchwork applique squares circles

➳✜➵✜➳ ITEM DESCRIPTION ➳✜➵✜➳ Here is an intricate slow stitch patchwork square I have used some hand dyed fabric using natural dyes as well as vintage and recycled pieces of fabric that I have collected some of the thread is hand dyed as well There is cotton, khadi cotton, vintage Japanese silk in the piece The moon fabric has been machine stitched and then by hand/slow stitch for additional embellishment I have used various colors of embroidery thread. I adore the Japanese sewing style of mending, repairing and patchwork called Boro. There is something that attracts me to making due and reusing what you may already have into another use. I hope you can appreciate this art, for it is a methodical and planned out process. Each piece has to be imagined and put to work for a new vision other than originally intended, which sometimes requires a fair length of time to create just the right look. This textile project is done with love and patience, certainly not done in a hurried process which is with most things these days. These are made with no exact intended purpose. Use as coasters, mug rugs, add them to your altar tables place them underneath your offering bowls Place them as additional decoration on your jeans, jackets or shirts to repair or cover… Add them to your quilting projects **you will receive this HAND STITCHED patch only, ➳➳➳➳➳ I T E M M E A S U R E M E N T S ➳➳➳➳➳ square patch is approximately 5.5 inches X 5.5 inches ➳➳➳➳➳ A NOTE ON RECLAIMED ITEMS ➳➳➳➳➳ Be aware when purchasing UPCYCLED/RECYCLED items that all items will arrive in A SECOND HAND condition, unless otherwise noted.
